Or maybe they were playing freeze tag…
I was hustling to get to work today, like vicious strides around food stalls and dodging motorcycle taxis, when I realized that everyone around me had come to a dead stop. A businessman in the middle of a staircase, a teenage couple waiting to go up the staircase, people in front of shops they had no interest in visiting, civil servants in their uniforms, all stoppped. And then I heard a tinny song playing through hidden loudspeakers.
This is not some dystopian nightmare minute of hate, this is the Thai National Anthem, and everyone stops respectfully for it. And I guess I do, too, because it’s awkward as hell to walk around all those mannequin people.
