A Little About Sala Kaew Ku
Built by the self-proclaimed mystic Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat, this sculpture garden is…insane. Among Hindu and Buddhist dieties are curiosities such as a life-size elephant being attacked by a pack of dogs, some of which appear to be riding scooters, the wheel of life, which you enter by walking through a concrete tube that symbolizes the phallus entering the vagina and includes episodes in life such as a policeman, a business woman, and a man stuck in an argument between his wife and mistress.
Sulilat’s mummified corpse is kept onsite in a glass-topped coffin surrounded by christmas lights and festive dolls. Unfortunately, the room was locked the day we visited. A park employee told us that Sulilat tried to become a buddhist monk twice, but could not. Each time he cut off his hair to enter the temple, he went blind in one eye. Another explanation that has been given is that he was half man and half animal.
